The Salt Cathedral in Zipaquira, Colombia is considered one of the modern wonders of the world and for good reason. If you are visiting Bogota then a trip out to the Salt Cathedral is a must and it is only 60 minutes away.
The unique geography of this area of Cundinamarca has left a huge deposit of salt which is still being mined today. Over the years the local miners have hewn out a formation which can only be described as a giant underground cathedral.
A large broad passage will lead you past the stages of the cross and down in to the main vaulted area of the salt cathedral which is used for special religious services today. You will marvel at the craftmanship of the salt statues and gaze in awe at the sheer magnitude of the cathedral, whilst contemplating that you are in fact deep underground.
The basic tour takes around 90 minutes with an official guide (english guides are available at no extra cost) and will gain you entrance to the mine and will finish off with a 3D presentation. Additional tours around the mining museum can also be arranged. The passage ways in to the cathedral are well lit, broad and there is plenty of air so the tour is suitable for most visitors.
