Villa de Leyva is renowned as being the most beautifully preserved Spanish colonial village in Colombia today. Located in the department of Boyaca, around 3 hours drive from Bogota, it is one of the top 10 things you should do when visiting the country.
Unlike other villages where colonial architecture exists, Villa de Leyva is completely unspoilt by modern buildings and is perfectly preserved. As such you get an all immersive experience of what the village was like when it was founded more than 400 years ago. The village includes one of the largest cobblestoned squares in the whole country.
The interesting thing about Villa de Leyva is that it is a modern thriving village (with hospitals, police stations and a town hall) but all the buildings are either restorations or built in a style that mimicks the original. Hence the appearance of this lovely place is perfectly maintained.
On the tour you will get plenty of time to stroll around the village and enjoy the architecture. There is a large number of high quality restaurants, cafes and shops.
